Orcas, also known as killer whales, are one of the most intelligent and adaptable predators in the ocean. While they typically feed on smaller prey such as fish and seals, there have been a few notable incidents where orcas have been observed hunting and killing great white sharks. It is important to note that not all Orca pods prey on Great White Sharks in fact even in areas where there is a pod that hunt Great White Sharks there can be separate pods with a different prey species.

Orcas have been witnessed hunting Great White Sharks in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and one incident was witnessed in 1997 off the Farallon Islands near San Francisco. A group of orcas were seen attacking a great white shark, and it was later discovered that they had partially eaten it. While this was an unusual event, it demonstrated that orcas are capable of taking down even the largest predators in the ocean.

South Africa has become a hot spot for orcas hunting great white sharks in recent years. Since 2017 when Port and Starboard the famous shark hunters were first observed in False Bay, there have been several other reported instances of orcas preying on great white sharks along the coast. The duo left a trail of devastation in their wake with a number of large Great White Sharks washing out onto shore with their livers removed. False Bay and Gansbaai, once the capitol of Great White Sharks around the world has been reduced to no sightings or a few sightings a year. It is also thought that it may not just be the iconic duo Port and Starboard hunting the Great Whites after the famous drone shot featured on Shark Week captured by DroneFanaticsSA observed a different orcas hunting a Great White. Even though Starboard was seen close to the group he didn't make the kill.

Even though it isn't a great time for Great White Shark lovers in South Africa it is still a fascinating time to observe the developments up and down the coast and a critical time to observe the ecological changes that happen as a result. While orcas hunting great white sharks is still a relatively rare occurrence, it highlights the complexity of the ocean ecosystem and the important role that predators play in maintaining balance. Orcas are intelligent and adaptable animals that are capable of taking down even the largest and most formidable prey, making them one of the most fascinating and respected predators in the ocean. 

It is also important to note that there are more Orca pods around the world that hunt different species of sharks but do not hunt Great Whites. We are talking specifically about the Orca pods that have been witnessed around the world. hunting specifically Great White Sharks. As our understanding of the ocean ecosystem continues to evolve, it is likely that we will learn more about the complex relationships between Orcas and Great White Sharks in the ocean, and the important role that each species plays in maintaining balance and biodiversity.
