The Ghost Sharks of the Mediterranean: A 3.2-Million-Year Mystery

Earlier this month, scuba divers removing abandoned ghost nets from a shipwreck between Tunisia and Sicily filmed something extraordinary: an adult great white shark gliding through the deep. The footage made global headlines. But the real story isn't that a great white was spotted in the Mediterranean. The real story is that anyone was surprised.
The Ghost Population
Great white sharks have always been part of the Mediterranean. Historical records stretching back more than 150 years document their presence across the region — from Spain and France to Italy, Malta and Greece. They were never abundant, but they were there. Decades of fishing pressure, prey depletion and accidental capture reduced sightings so dramatically that most people assumed they had gone.
They hadn't. Scientists call them a "ghost population": not extinct, but rarely observed. Seldom seen, yet never fully gone.
The June footage may be the first filmed evidence of an adult Mediterranean great white in over 40 years. Combined with a juvenile shark accidentally caught by fishermen off Alicante, Spain, in April 2023, it confirms what researchers have long suspected — these sharks are still here, still living their lives in the deep, simply invisible to us.
3.2 Million Years of Isolation
Here is where the story becomes extraordinary. A landmark genetic study by the University of Bologna, published in 2020, analysed DNA from historical Mediterranean shark remains and discovered something no one expected: the Mediterranean great white shark is one of the oldest and most genetically distinct white shark populations on Earth.
They have been isolated from other populations for approximately 3.2 million years. That predates modern humans by over two million years. And counterintuitively, their DNA is more closely related to great whites in the Pacific Ocean than to those in the neighbouring Atlantic — suggesting a complex and ancient evolutionary journey that science is still piecing together.
The consequence of this isolation is a population with extremely low genetic diversity. Small in number, fragile, and shaped by what geneticists call a bottleneck. Critically endangered. And entirely unique — if this population disappears, its distinct lineage disappears with it forever.
Why Are They Appearing Now?
Dr. Nicholas Ray, an expert in great white shark population dynamics at Nottingham Trent University, cautions against reading the recent sightings as good news.
"Increased sightings do not necessarily indicate population recovery," he explains. "Climate change often redistributes species rather than increasing their numbers." As ocean temperatures rise and prey distributions shift, highly mobile apex predators like great whites adjust their movements accordingly. We may simply be seeing sharks in places where cameras and witnesses now exist — or in waters that are newly hospitable to them as the climate changes.
There's also a more hopeful explanation: improved monitoring. Underwater cameras, citizen science apps and satellite tracking mean that encounters which would once have gone unrecorded are now documented. The sharks may not be more numerous. We are just better at seeing them.
The Question of Nurseries
The most significant implication of the 2023 Alicante juvenile isn't its rarity — it's its age. Juveniles don't travel from the Atlantic or Pacific. If a juvenile great white is in the Mediterranean, it was probably born there.
"The occurrence of juvenile specimens raises the question whether active reproduction may be occurring in the region," said Dr. José Carlos Báez, lead researcher of the Alicante study. If that's true, the Mediterranean isn't just a transit route for lost individuals wandering in from the Atlantic. It may still function as a nursery — a developmental habitat for one of the ocean's most ancient and endangered lineages.
That possibility changes everything from a conservation standpoint. Protecting a species you can barely find requires first understanding where it breeds, feeds and migrates. For Mediterranean great whites, those answers remain largely unknown.
What This Means for All of Us
The story of the Mediterranean ghost shark is, in miniature, the story of great white sharks everywhere. Populations reduced to shadows of their former selves. Ecosystems quietly unravelling in their absence. A species that has survived 45 million years of planetary upheaval now struggling under the concentrated pressure of a single century of human activity.
