This program offers interns the opportunity to improve their fieldwork and scuba diving skills while experiencing life in rural Mozambique.

Zavora, Mozambique is known for its remoteness, offering interns the unique opportunity to explore a marine ecosystem with little human impact. It is also one of the last places where Manta Rays can still be found in high abundance, making it a critical location for research on this species. During the internship, students will learn about manta rays, sharks, humpback whales, and nudibranchs from experts. They will also get chance to participate in the photo-identification and cataloging of these species.

Interns will work alongside dedicated scientists conducting accredited research projects important for Mozambique and science in general. They will receive practical and theoretical training in data collection, sampling, and identification techniques. Although assistance and supervision are provided, interns are ultimately expected to work independently to achieve their personal goals and the objectives of the research project.

Tasks and duties include underwater photo identification of Manta Rays, Whale Sharks, Leopard Sharks, Smalleye Stingrays, and Turtles. Other activities include predatory fish surveys, baited underwater video deployment and analysis, nudibranch searches and quadrat studies. In addition, interns will be involved in field research organisation, fish surveys at Rio Saiñas Wreck, photo quadrat at Rio Saiñas Wreck, Seahorse monitoring program, Turtle patrolling and monitoring, data entry and database management.

The internship program also includes educational activities such as activities with kids from the local community, public talks, underwater clean-ups, beach cleaning, and workshops on topics such as recycling.
