Mossel Bay: The Thrilling Adventures of the Great White Sharks and Orcas

For many tourists and locals, the thought of encountering a great white shark in the wild is both terrifying and exhilarating. For those brave enough to venture into the waters off Mossel Bay, the past few weeks have been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride of excitement, drama, and suspense.

Recently, at our Kleinbrak Diving location, it seemed that every trip out to sea was met with three or four great white sharks. That is until the sharks slowed down, with only one shark spotted on a particular trip, which coincidentally coincided with a dead whale washing into the bay. The crew initially thought the sharks were following the dead whale, but upon closer inspection, no bite marks were found on the whale and no sharks were spotted around the location of the dead whale once it had washed out onto the beach.

As a last-ditch attempt to find the sharks, the crew decided to try the island and were thrilled to find four great whites. The sharks had finally moved towards the island to hunt the young seal pups that were running from it to hunt. However, just as they thought their luck was turning, orcas appeared on the scene, and the sharks disappeared for a few days.

The crew thought they were in for a long spell without the great white sharks, but luckily a few days later, four sharks showed up again. Then, just a day later, the orcas showed up once again. At first, they were wrongly identified as Port and Starboard, but it was later discovered that it was actually two different orcas - one with a collapsed dorsal to the left like Port, and another orca with a straight dorsal.

With trepidation, the team set out on the 8th of May, 2023, to see if the great whites were still in the bay. Reports came in that there was one at Seal Island, which immediately boosted morale. After a few hours of chumming, they got their first shark, and from there, they didn't stop. By the end of the tour, the team had encountered seven great white sharks - one of the best trips in Mossel Bay this year.

This recent spate of activity is not uncommon, as great white sharks and orcas are both known to frequent the area. Orcas, also known as killer whales, are apex predators and are known to prey on great white sharks. Mossel Bay is a hotspot for great white shark sightings, and it's no wonder that tourists flock to the area for the chance to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. With the added thrill of the orcas, the waters off Mossel Bay are a true haven for adrenaline junkies and nature enthusiasts alike.

The recent events in Mossel Bay have been nothing short of spectacular, with great white sharks and orcas putting on an exciting show for all those lucky enough to witness it. It just goes to show that nature is unpredictable, and you never know what thrilling adventure might be waiting for you just below the surface.
